Exporters Assessing the Extent of Damage
After the massive fire at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, exporter associations are working to estimate the losses. They have already asked their members to submit detailed lists of damaged goods using a specific format. Within the next one or two days, they expect to get accurate information about the total volume of goods stored in the cargo area at the time of the fire.
At the same time, exporters are worried about how long the airport will remain closed.
Uncertainty Over Airport Closure
Business owners said that if the airport remains closed for long, both passengers and exporters will face serious financial losses. Bangladesh mainly exports readymade garments, perishable goods such as vegetables, fruits, and betel leaves. In addition, international courier services also use the airport to send parcels and important documents abroad. Exporters involved in these sectors are expected to be the most affected.

BGMEA President Expresses Concern
Mahmud Hasan Khan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said:
“কী পরিমাণ পণ্যের ক্ষতি হয়েছে, এই মুহূর্তে আমাদের কাছে কোনো তথ্য নেই। তবে সাধারণত আমাদের সদস্য কারখানাগুলো প্রায় সবাই এয়ারে পণ্য পাঠান। প্রতিদিন গড়ে ২০০-২৫০টি কারখানার পণ্য রপ্তানি হয়। সে হিসেবে এই পরিমাণ কারখানা ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হওয়ার আশঙ্কা করছি।”
Translation: “We don’t have exact information yet about the total damage. Usually, most of our member factories export goods by air. On average, 200 to 250 factories send products daily. Based on that, we fear goods from around that many factories may be affected.”
BGMEA President also added:
“তবে বিমানবন্দর বন্ধ থাকলেও ক্ষতির মুখে পড়বেন রপ্তানিকারকরা। যদি তা দ্রুতই খুলে দেওয়া হয় তবে কম ক্ষতি হবে, যদি বেশি দিন বন্ধ থাকে তবে বেশি ক্ষতি হবে।”
Translation: “Even if the airport stays closed, exporters will suffer losses. If it reopens soon, the damage will be less, but if it stays closed longer, the losses will be greater.”

Exporters of Perishable Goods Also Affected
SM Jahangir Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables, and Allied Products Exporters Association (BFVAPEA), said:
“আমাদের প্রতিদিনই অনেক পণ্য থাকে, এমনটা নয়। বিমানের স্থান ফাঁকা থাকার ওপর নির্ভর করে আমাদের বিভিন্ন ডেস্টিনেশনে পণ্য পাঠানো। তাই যেদিন স্থান বেশি পাই সেদিন পণ্যও বেশি দিতে পারি। আমরা খোঁজখবর নিচ্ছি আজকে আমাদের সদস্যদের কী পরিমাণ পণ্য ছিল।”
Translation: “We don’t always have large volumes of goods every day. It depends on how much space is available on flights. We are now collecting information about how much product our members had at the airport today.”
“আপনার ব্যবসা এখন অনলাইনে— Storola-এর সাথে সহজ ও স্মার্টভাবে!”
He further said:
“পচনশীল পণ্য হওয়ায় আমরা চাই দ্রুত বিমান চলাচল শুরু হোক। এতে আমাদের রপ্তানির জন্য পাইপলাইনে থাকা পণ্যগুলো নষ্ট হবে না।”
Translation: “Since our goods are perishable, we want flights to resume quickly. That will prevent the products waiting for export from getting spoiled.”
Export Industry Faces Major Setback
Exporters fear the fire and temporary airport closure will create a serious disruption in Bangladesh’s export chain, especially for air-shipped garments and perishable goods. Quick action to reopen the airport and ensure cargo operations will be crucial to limit financial damage.
