Veteran Journalist Inspires Future Environmental Scientists at NSTU Seminar

Noakhali, September 14, 2025 – The Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM) at Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) fulfilled a long-standing student aspiration by hosting Mr. Mir Liakat Ali, a towering figure in journalism, for a special seminar on the Environmental Communication and Journalism course (ESDM 4105). Organized with the dedicated efforts of Associate Professor Dr. Md Shiblur Rahman, the event brought invaluable insights to students eager to learn from a seasoned professional.

Mir Liakat Ali, Editor and Publisher of Daily Akashjomin and former Mofussil Editor of Daily Janakantha, began his journalism career in 1982. A true son of the soil, Ali has not only excelled in journalism but also made significant contributions to society through initiatives like the Amtali Model Foundation, Amtali Samaj Kalyan Sangstha, Amtali Cultural Academy, Mir Liakat Ali Government Primary School, an Adult Education Center, and a unique library that rewards readers for engaging with books. Additionally, he runs a YouTube channel, Education Museum, where he shares expertise on the fundamentals of journalism.

During the seminar, Ali captivated students with stories from his 43-year career, emphasizing the critical role of communication in environmental advocacy. “Science alone isn’t enough; you must tell stories that connect with people’s hearts to drive change,” he said, urging students to blend their scientific knowledge with compelling storytelling to address pressing issues like climate change and disaster management.

Assistant Professor Sajib Ahmed, who played a key role in organizing the event, expressed his gratitude, stating, “I sincerely thank Shiblur Rahman Sir for bringing such an experienced and wise person to the students.” His words underscored the significance of Ali’s visit in inspiring the next generation of environmental communicators.

The interactive session saw students engaging with Ali on topics ranging from ethical reporting to combating environmental misinformation. Many left motivated to explore innovative ways to bridge the gap between science and society, with some inspired to pursue careers in environmental journalism.

Dr. Md Shiblur Rahman highlighted the event’s impact, noting, “Mr. Ali’s real-world experiences resonated deeply with our students, reminding them that their responsibility as future environmental scientists extends beyond research to informing and engaging the public.”

The seminar marks a significant step in strengthening ties between academia and the media at NSTU. With plans for more such interactions, the ESDM department aims to equip students with the skills to advocate effectively for environmental change. As one student remarked, “Today, we learned how to make our science matter to the world.”
