Godkhali, Jessore—Bangladesh’s flower capital—has seen a thriving flower market ahead of Victory Day, with sales reaching 2 crore taka in just three days. Farmers are hopeful this season will bring profits after years of losses, driven by record-breaking demand for marigolds, roses, tuberoses, gerberas, and chrysanthemums.
This year, marigolds stole the spotlight, selling for up to 600 taka per thousand—a significant rise from last year’s 350 taka. Farmers have also benefited from increased prices for other flowers, with roses priced at 12–15 taka each and tuberoses at 10 taka per stem. The flower fields lining the Jessore-Benapole highway have turned into a bustling hub as wholesalers from Dhaka and Chattogram flock to secure their stock.
Godkhali alone supplies 75% of the flowers sold during national celebrations such as Victory Day, Spring Festival, Valentine’s Day, and the Bengali New Year. Over 6,000 families are engaged in cultivating 11 types of flowers across 1,000 hectares in Jessore. Annual flower sales in the region are valued at approximately 400 crore taka, with the current season expected to generate over 100 crore taka in revenue if favorable weather persists.
However, flower farmers faced challenges this year due to heavy rainfall and the need for extra care. Despite setbacks, their dedication is paying off. Jhikargachha Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Jahangir Alam noted, “With favorable weather and market conditions, we expect sales to reach several hundred crore taka this season.”
As the market thrives, Jessore’s flower farmers are gearing up to meet the country’s blooming demand with renewed hope and enthusiasm.
