Was Khaleda Zia the First Female Freedom Fighter?

Recently, at a meeting held at the Institution of Engineers, Dhaka, Professor Dr. Kamrul Ahsan of Jahangirnagar University made a statement that has sparked wide discussion on social media.

He said:

“প্রথম নারী মুক্তিযোদ্ধা হচ্ছেন আমাদের মাতা বেগম খালেদা জিয়া। প্রথম শিশু মুক্তিযোদ্ধা হচ্ছেন শিশুতারেক, শিশু আরাফাত।”

Translation: “The first female freedom fighter of Bangladesh is our mother, Begum Khaleda Zia. The first child freedom fighters are baby Tarek and baby Arafat.”

This remark triggered a range of responses and discussions nationwide as it swiftly went viral on social media.

Background of the Statement

Professor Kamrul Ahsan made this remark while speaking about the role of political leaders during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. He tried to highlight the contributions of Begum Khaleda Zia and her family in that critical period of the nation’s history.

 

BNP’s Claim: Khaleda Zia as First Female Freedom Fighter

This is not the first time such a claim was made. Earlier, the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, also stated that Khaleda Zia was the country’s first female freedom fighter.
