A Loud Blast Woke the Neighbors in the Middle of the Night

A gas leak explosion at a six-story building in Jatrabari’s Shahid Farooq Road area has left three members of the same family, including a child, seriously burned. The incident happened around 1:45 AM on Wednesday night (July 9) on the ground floor of the building near Khadimul Quran Women’s Madrasa.

All Three Victims in Critical Condition

The victims are:

  • Ripon, aged 40

  • His wife Iti, aged 30

  • Their daughter Rafia, just 3 years old

All three were taken to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and are currently receiving treatment. Doctors say their condition is very critical.

‘We Found Them Burned on the Floor’

A neighbour, Taslima Moni, shared what she saw:

“I heard a loud bang just before 2 AM. When I rushed to the house, I saw that the windows and doors were blown out. All three family members were lying inside, burned badly. We immediately took them to the hospital.”

Mosquito Coil May Have Triggered the Blast

Moni believes the explosion happened while lighting a mosquito coil, which might have sparked the gas collected from a leak.

“There was likely a gas buildup from a leak. As soon as they lit the coil, it exploded,” she said.

Doctor’s Update: Child Burned the Most

Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident surgeon at the emergency department of the burn institute, gave the following update:

  • Ripon has burns on 70% of his body

  • Iti has burns on 45%

  • Little Rafia has burns on 90% of her body

All three are in critical condition.
