Rickshaw-Puller Sujon Takes Nomination

Sujon, the well-known rickshaw-puller who gained attention after saluting during the July uprising, has officially collected nomination papers.
He is contesting for a seat in the Dhaka–8 constituency.

On Thursday evening (20 November), he collected the nomination papers from the National Citizen Party (NCP).

Reaction After Taking Nomination

After receiving the nomination, Sujon said that many people were making different remarks about him on Facebook.
However, he does not take these comments seriously and is not afraid of them, Said,

“আমার সঙ্গে কোনো কর্মী না থাকলেও আমার সঙ্গে আছে জনগণ। আছে সাধারণ ছাত্র ও প্রবাসীরা।”

Translation: “Even if no party workers stand beside me, the people are with me. General students and expatriates are with me.”

Why He Wants to Contest the Election

While explaining why he wants to participate in the election, Sujon gave strong and bold statements.
He questioned why people look down on a rickshaw-puller who wants to be an MP. Sujon remark,

“এতিমের টাকা মেরে যখন সংসদে দাঁড়ানো যায়, তখন আমি রিকশা চালক হয়ে কেন দাঁড়াতে পারব না? যাত্রাপালায় নেচে যদি সংসদে যাওয়া যায়, তখন রিকশাওয়ালা কেন যেতে পারবে না?”

Translation: “If someone can stand in parliament after stealing orphans’ money, then why can’t I stand as a rickshaw-puller?
If someone can dance in a theatre play and go to parliament, then why can’t a rickshaw-puller go there?”

Voice of the Working Class

Rickshaw-Puller Sujon says he wants to speak for the people who work the hardest in society—rickshaw-pullers and labourers.
He aims to protect their rights and raise their concerns in national politics.

He added that he came into politics for the benefit of people, rickshaw-pullers, and working-class citizens.
