Too Many Awards Shows Instead of Good Films
In recent years, Bangladesh’s entertainment industry seems to be holding more award shows than producing quality films and dramas. Many of these shows have sparked criticism, especially on social media. Recently, models’ dresses at an award event drew heavy backlash online. People also criticized these so-called “random award shows” on Facebook, questioning their purpose and value.
Celebrities Speaking Out
Several top stars of the film industry have started speaking out against such award shows. Earlier, actor Omar Sani expressed his dissatisfaction, and now actress Purnima has openly shared her opinion.
Purnima’s Criticism of Random Awards
Purnima said she often receives invitations to attend such events and accept awards. But she questioned the reason behind these awards.
“আমাকেও অ্যাওয়ার্ড নিতে বলে। আমি জিজ্ঞেস করি, কোন কাজের জন্য দেবেন? তারা বলে- এমনি।”
Translation: “They ask me to receive an award too. I ask, for which work will you give it? They say – just like that.”

She explained further:
“এমনি আবার অ্যাওয়ার্ড কেন দেবেন? আমাকে উপস্থাপনা করতেও বলে। অথচ যাদের এসব অ্যাওয়ার্ড দেওয়া হচ্ছে, তাদের নামই প্রথম শুনলাম। কাউকেই চিনলাম না। কী কারণে, কোন কাজের জন্য অ্যাওয়ার্ড দেওয়া হচ্ছে কিছুই জানি না। এখানে ফেমাস কেউ নেই। তাই আমাকে ডাকলেই আমি যাই না।”
Translation: “Why would you give an award just like that? They even ask me to host. But the names of those receiving these awards are completely new to me. I don’t know them at all. I don’t even know why or for what work they are getting awards. There are no famous people there. That’s why I don’t attend when they invite me.”
Her remarks reveal her frustration with the lack of credibility in such programs.
Desire to Return to Acting
Despite her disappointment with the award scene, Purnima expressed her wish to return to regular acting if she finds good stories and respectable roles. She showed special interest in working on OTT platforms, which are becoming very popular in Bangladesh.
However, she also raised a concern about unfair practices in OTT productions.
“ওটিটিতে কাজের ইচ্ছা আছে। কিন্তু সেখানে বড় মাপের একটা সিন্ডিকেট আছে। বাইরে কাউকে নিতে চায় না। যারা তাদের সাথে সম্পর্কিত, শুধু তাদের নিয়েই বেশি কাজ হয়। আমি যদি প্রাপ্য সম্মান আর ভালো গল্প পাই, অবশ্যই কাজ করতে চাই।”
Translation: “I want to work in OTT. But there is a big syndicate there. They don’t want to take outsiders. Only those who are connected with them get most of the work. If I get proper respect and good stories, I will definitely work.”
