Jamaat leader’s controversial comments

At a meeting in Jobra village, a village near the university, Jamaat candidate Sirajul Islam said,

Translation: “Chittagong University is established on our ancestral property. We are the owners of Chittagong University and the surrounding area. We are the landlords, we will not accept anyone interfering with the landlords.”

Jamaat leader Sirajul Islam also said,

Translation: “This university is our heart. We own this place, so we will not accept any injustice. We have to respect it. If the university does not respect us properly, we will take necessary action against the people.”

Habibullah Khaled, the office secretary of the Chittagong University branch of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, was present at the meeting organized in Jobra village. Before the Jamaat leader’s speech, he also spoke about the incident of the clash. Habibullah Khaled said at the time,

Translation: “Such incidents have occurred due to misunderstanding. The real terrorists are not from this area, but from outside. They must be arrested. I appeal to the locals, you have never done such a thing; whoever did it, hand them over. News is coming that terrorists have come from different areas including Raozan in an organized manner. Everyone should maintain good relations.”

Students’ protests and slogans

After the speech given at the meeting was spread on social media, students expressed their anger. As a result, students participated in the protest the night before. At that time, they chanted slogans,

  • “Zamindari with the university, it will not happen, it will not happen”
  • “Flattery on the mattress, light the fire together”
  • “Terrorists’ brokers, beware”
  • “My brother’s blood, I will not let it go in vain”

Statement and position of Chhatra Shibir

The Chittagong University branch of Chhatra Shibir has issued a statement rejecting the statement made by Jamaat leader Sirajul Islam at the exchange of views held in Jobra village. At the same time, Chhatra Shibir has expressed regret that Chhatra Shibir leader Habibullah Khaled could not highlight the real truth of the incident at that meeting. After the angry reaction of the students, the statement signed by Chhatra Shibir’s Publicity Secretary Md. Ishaq Bhuiyan was sent to the media this Saturday morning.

The Chhatra Shibir’s statement said,

Translation: The Chittagong University branch of Chhatra Shibir rejects with hatred the arrogant and insulting statement made by Sirajul Islam Jobra, the leader of Hathazari Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami and party MP candidate, at the exchange of views with the locals. The statement he made hides the misdeeds of the real terrorists. His statement is in the name of giving immunity to local terrorists.

Accusations of blaming BNP and Chhatra Dal

The Chhatra Shibir statement said that local Chhatra Dal leaders were directly involved in the incident. Even the clash took place on the orders of a BNP leader, who was later expelled from the party but was not brought under the law.

Chhatra Dal’s counter-reaction

However, former vice-president of Chittagong University branch Chhatra Dal Mohammad Sohel denied the allegations. He said that Chhatra Shibir was blaming BNP and Chhatra Dal for political purposes. In fact, local BNP leaders worked to pacify both sides.
