Jamaat Chief Makes Promise in New York

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has promised to reduce women’s working hours if his party assumes power. He made this statement while addressing a civic reception in New York on Sunday evening (local time), organized by the Coalition of Bangladeshi Americans.

“We Don’t Lock Women Up”

Jamaat Chief Dr. Rahman criticized the negative propaganda against his party, saying that many falsely claim Jamaat would restrict women’s freedom if they came to power.

Translation: “They accuse us of locking women inside their homes if we come to power. But where would we get so much money to buy all those locks?”

He added that women, especially mothers, are playing multiple roles in society and deserve fairer work conditions.

“Working Mothers Deserve Fair Hours”

The Jamaat chief praised mothers for their dual responsibilities — nurturing children and performing professional duties simultaneously.

Translation: “Mothers are giving birth, raising their children with care, and at the same time fulfilling their professional responsibilities.”

Jamaat Chief described the equal eight-hour work schedule for both men and women as unjust, promising reforms if Jamaat comes to power.

Translation: “Equal eight working hours for both men and women is unfair to women… If we come to power, we will reduce working hours for mothers.”

Comments on Justice and Investment

Jamaat Chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also commented on ongoing national issues, saying that the people of Bangladesh want to see justice for the July killings before the current government’s term ends.

Translation: “People of Bangladesh want to see visible justice for the July killings before the current government’s term ends.”

He further added that the next government must ensure fair conclusions to these cases and pledged to enhance investment opportunities if Jamaat is elected to power.
