For several months, students have been staging protests, sit-ins, and various demonstrations demanding the establishment of an independent university. Taking their movement a step further, the students of Government Titumir College have now hung a banner reading “Titumir University” at the main entrance of the college. This action took place today, Tuesday (January 7), as part of their demand to transform the college into a full-fledged university.
Earlier in the morning, the students held a protest rally on the college campus. They then marched along the Mohakhali-Amatali road and returned to the main entrance, where they continued their sit-in. During this time, they covered the previous nameplate with banners both inside and outside, renaming it “Titumir University.”
Accusing the Ministry of Education of showing duplicity regarding the university transformation, the students said, “Why did they include us in the committee of seven colleges while initiating the process to transform Titumir College into a university? They could have formed the committee with just six colleges. The Ministry of Education is inconsistent in its statements.” Aman Ullah Alvi, a second-year Marketing student, said, “In protest, we demonstrated from the morning and then covered the main entrance of the college with a banner reading ‘Titumir University.’ We are demanding the prompt transformation of Titumir College into a university.”
He further added, “This is how the nameplate of Jinnah College was replaced with Titumir College. Now, Titumir College has been renamed as Titumir University.”
