A German investigation has uncovered disturbing Telegram groups with up to 70,000 members openly sharing advice, videos, and tips related to rape and sexual violence. Participants admitted to assaulting their wives, mothers, sisters, and partners, with some offering their victims to others in the group. Others shared live videos of the abuse.
The groups also shared tips on how to sedate victims, with links to online stores selling sedatives disguised as common products like hair treatments.
Telegram, an encrypted messaging app, has come under fire for allowing such groups to thrive. Despite the platform’s claim of blocking harmful content, many deactivated groups quickly reformed under new names, continuing their disturbing activities.
This investigation comes after a similar case in France, where a man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for drugging and raping his wife, while offering her to others for abuse. 50 other men were convicted for their involvement.
The investigation raises serious questions about how anonymous platforms like Telegram are used to facilitate such crimes. Experts are calling for stricter regulations, better monitoring, and stronger cooperation between tech companies and law enforcement to prevent these kinds of abuses.
