Investigations in Germany have also led to disturbing findings of Telegram groups with thousands of members, where advice videos or tips on rape or sexual violence were shared. The participants confessed to sexually assaulting their wives, mothers, sisters, and partners, and some offered their victims to other attendees of the meetings. Some posted live video feeds of the abuse. The groups also exchanged tips on how to sedate victims, with links to online stores selling sedatives disguised as typical products such as hair treatment.
Telegram, an encrypted messaging service, has faced criticism for enabling such groups. While the platform claimed to block harmful content, many of the groups that were removed in this way simply reformed under new names and continued their disturbing activities.
The investigation comes after similar case in France, where an individual was sentenced to 20 years in prison after drugging and raping his wife, while offering her as a prey to other men. 50 additional men were convicted for their participation.
The investigation brings into serious question the extent to which anonymous apps like Telegram are employed to enable such crimes. Some experts say that tech companies need to be subject to stricter regulations, better monitoring and closer cooperation with law enforcement to avoid these kinds of abuses. Public awareness and legal reforms are critical to ensuring safe digital spaces for all.
