Attack on Bangladeshi Mission in Agartala Sparks Action, Arrests 7 Suspects

After members of the Hindu nationalist organization Hindu Sangharsa Samiti attacked the Bangladeshi Assistant High Commission in Agartala, India, three police officials were suspended. The terrorists burned the national flag of Bangladesh and damaged property. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) has also been sent to police headquarters and relieved of their duties. In relation to the event, seven people have also been taken into custody.

West Tripura’s Superintendent of Police (SP), Kiran Kumar, affirmed these actions on Tuesday, December 3. The three suspended cops were sub-inspectors, he said. In addition, an inquiry is being conducted to make sure the proper legal action is taken after a case was filed at the New Capital Complex police station in Agartala.

The Bangladeshi Assistant High Commission was attacked on Monday afternoon when members of the Hindu Sangharsa Samiti attacked the building. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the occurrence is “regrettable.” To protect the diplomatic post, more security troops, including paramilitary members, have been sent in.

The Bangladeshi government has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the incident. A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday noted that the attackers, under apparent premeditation, broke the main gate, damaged property inside the mission, and desecrated the national flag in the presence of local law enforcement. The statement criticized the inaction of police officers who were supposed to control the situation from the outset.

The statement further mentioned that a similar violent protest occurred in Kolkata on November 28. These incidents have been labeled as violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which governs the protection of diplomatic missions and their premises.
