The government is working on a mega project to develop a 205km pipeline linking Bhola and Khulna at a cost of BDT 4,500 crore. The pipeline will connect Bhola’s natural gas with the national grid, being handled by Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL). Set for completion in 2029, it will supply 180 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd), addressing energy shortages in the South and underpinning industrial growth.
A 2023 plan to build a pipeline from Bhola to Khulna was shelved, but the government remains intent on using Bhola’s gas. A 65 km long pipeline for Tk 1,300 crore will be constructed to carry gas to mainland from Bhutan. Additional to state-controlled institutions, private businesses, such as Intraco Refueling Station PLC, are attempting to add 20 mmcfd to the supply of gas from Bhola.
These initiatives are intended to provide a consistent energy supply to factories and power plants in the area, fulfilling the nation’s increasing energy demand and bolstering economic development.
