Chattogram Port has launched an online gate pass system to enhance the movement of import and export goods, minimizing delays and easing traffic congestion.
The system was officially launched 18 February by the Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA). This digital initiative, alongside the process of moving goods in and out of the port, will become more productive, accelerating carrying operations. Now, the Terminal Operating System (TOS) of Chattogram Port includes this online gate pass landmark, upgraded with technical assistance from DataSoft System Bangladesh Limited. Expediting container handling, loading, and unloading operations, CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman declared that the introduction of the gate pass would boost port productivity. Offering correct data on vehicle traffic with the port and enhancing security measures, the new system permits real-time monitoring of cargo movement, which is highlighted by CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman. Earlier, port users had to queue up to gather gate passes manually, that caused traffic blockage on Airport Road. Rather than providing for traffic jams, vehicles would park along the roadside while drivers obtained passes.
Mohammed Tazul Islam, second port affairs secretary of the Chattogram C&F Agents Association, said before, vehicles had to wait for hours to enter the port, which led to both road blockage and security issues for transport workers. He also said this long-standing problem has been resolved now. Around 8,000 vehicles move daily by Chattogram port. Under the new system the port entry fee of Tk57.50 can now be paid in advance via mobile banking before going the gate. Reducing vehicle entry time from 15-20 minutes to just 1-2 minutes.
This Chattogram port’s journey towards digitalization started in 2012 with the introduction of the Computerized Container Terminal Management System (CTMS). Passing times, the system has been upgraded to the Terminal Operating System (TOS).
