A big fire broke out on St. Martin’s Island, Cox’s Bazar, early Tuesday morning (January 14, 2025). The fire destroyed three well-known resorts, but no one was hurt.
The fire started at around 2:30 AM in the Golachipa area near the western beach of the island. Witnesses said it began at Beach Valley Resort and spread quickly to nearby resorts.
Three resorts—Shairi, Beach Valley, and Kingshuk—were completely burned. Local resident Nur explained that the fire spread so fast that there wasn’t enough time to save anything.
At first, local people tried to put out the fire. Later, the Coast Guard, Navy, and Tourist Police came to help. It took about 1.5 hours of work to control the fire, and it was finally stopped by 4:00 AM.
Investigations show that the fire may have started from garbage being burned on the beach by a nearby resort. The flames spread and caused the disaster.
Local resident Zamir pointed out that there is no fire station on St. Martin’s Island. This made it harder to fight the fire and stop it quickly.
The loss of these resorts is a big blow to St. Martin’s tourism, which depends on visitors. People are now asking for better safety measures to prevent such events in the future.
