The power production sector of Bangladesh operates under a financial crisis because independent power producers (IPPs) hold an outstanding government debt of BDT 3,662 crore. The difficulty in obtaining heavy fuel oil or HFO has increased because the service charge restriction has made fuel imports problematic. During summer peak usage the lack of fuel supply poses potential difficulties for them in generating power. Power Development Board (PDB) implements expense reduction measures along with subsidy cuts that could result in additional power supply problems.
The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) may provide fuel alternatives as a remedy to the power crisis. However, they could have problems delivering it properly. The summer season leads to greater electricity usage by consumers because heat levels raise the demand for electricity consumption. The electricity demand rises as a result. A significant electricity shortage is expected in Bangladesh unless immediate action is taken which will negatively impact both daily routines and businesses throughout the country.
