Graffiti and slogans against Shakib in the Mirpur Stadium premises

At Mirpur Stadium, anti-Shakib Al Hasan slogans and graffiti were prominent. Shakib apologized for his silence during the student campaign against discrimination. In addition to returning home to play the last Test, he has requested the fans’ support.

Social media reactions to Shakib’s apology have been mixed. While many support him, others express anger. Mirpur students, in particular, have decided to prohibit Shakib from playing at their local stadium. A group of irate students staged a rally at Sher E Bangla Stadium on Thursday, October 10. There, anti-Shakib graffiti was plastered across the stadium, Shakib’s portrait was taken down, and shoes were stamped on it.

North South University student Fardeen Hasan Anton declared, “Shakib, the friend of autocracy, cannot play in Mirpur, where my brothers were killed.” One of the initiative’s organizers, Al Mashnoon, a student at Chittagong University, stated, “If Shakib is to play on Mirpur’s ground, he will have to walk over my dead body.”

The graffiti was created by Sadman Saqib Adeeb from Dhaka University, Syed Muaz from Jahangirnagar University, Pratyaya from North South, Muaz from ULAB, and Jawad from BUBT. Notably, Habibur Rahman, a prominent figure in the student movement in Mirpur, and Pius from the People Activist Coalition were also involved.

Mirpur residents have made it clear that Shakib, who was personally implicated in vote stealing and was vacationing overseas, will never again be permitted to don the Bangladeshi Jersey.
