HMPV Virus Detected in India, Two Cases Confirmed in Karnataka

The health ministry in Karnataka revealed on Monday that two newborns had been diagnosed with the HMPV virus. The detection of two Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in Karnataka was verified by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Monday. According to the Union health ministry on Monday, the instances were found by the ICMR’s regular monitoring for different respiratory viruses, which is consistent with their continuous efforts to track respiratory infections across the country.
After being taken to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru, a three-month-old girl with a history of bronchopneumonia was found to have HMPV. The government stated that she had already been discharged.

On January 3, an eight-month-old boy who had previously experienced bronchopneumonia and was brought to Baptist Hospital tested positive for HMPV. It reported that he is now recovering.
The government highlighted that it is crucial to remember that none of the patients has ever traveled abroad.
What is HMPV virus?
The respiratory virus known as human metapneumovirus (HMPV) usually produces mild to moderate flu-like symptoms. Direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces is the main way that the virus is spread, and it is most common in the winter and early spring.

Most persons have mild symptoms including cough, runny nose or nasal congestion, sore throat and fever. More severe illness, with wheezing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, cough, pneumonia, and in adults, aggravation of asthma, also has been reported. In children younger than 1 year of age, the elderly and persons who have weak immune systems, HMPV can cause more serious respiratory illness.
