Mongla Port has taken a major step forward by introducing railway transport for goods for the first time. On February 21, a train carrying 30 wagons of imported molasses (chitagur) set off from the port, heading towards Baghabari in Sirajganj. This marks a new chapter in the port’s operations, promising faster and more efficient cargo movement across the country.
The molasses came from Pakistan on a ship named MT Dolphin 19, which arrived at Mongla Port on February 6. After unloading, the goods were sent directly by train, making it the first rail transport from the port. This new train service will help reduce transport costs, make trade faster, and take some pressure off the roads. Officials say it will improve Mongla Port’s connection to other parts of the country and make trade easier.
Mongla Port has been growing in recent years, handling more ships and goods. With train transport now available, the port is expected to become even more important for Bangladesh’s trade and economy.
