In 2012, SM Kaykobad enrolled at BRAC University to study architecture, marking the beginning of his academic and professional career. He is currently growing his knowledge by enrolling in MIT’s master’s program. He was raised at Chittagong and Bogra cantonments, while Bogra served as the setting for most of his childhood. He earned his HSC from RAJUK College in 2011.
Although his parents’ wishes that he would become a doctor, Kaykobad’s love was architecture. He worked to find out real-world experience while he was a student at BRAC University. He co-founded “Sahosthapan,” a modest creative firm, in his second year. It soon gained popularity and secured projects from Rajshahi and Sylhet. He also briefly engaged with Punjabi clothing. Furthermore, which proved to be a lucrative business.
He became a faculty member at BRAC University in 2017 after earning his undergraduate degree. His research during his teaching career concentrated on urban issues, including Dhaka’s scarcity of public spaces. He emphasized how the lack of easily accessible, well-designed public spaces has led to restaurants becoming the preferred gathering locations, which constituted a crucial component of his idea. Kaikobad believes architecture is a holistic tool to alter the dynamic built environment with positivity, where buildings are not individual entities but an essential part of the speculative progression of time, culture and memory. Driven by this belief, his academic and professional projects reflect context-oriented experiential space-making with an understanding of design as a non-linear process of a collaborative approach to respond to contemporary needs.
Kaykobad’s achievements have been recognized on a national and international level. In 2015, he was chosen for the prestigious RABT Scholarship in Sri Lanka and won the Dot Art and Architecture Bangladesh Academic Project award. A year later, his exceptional undergraduate thesis earned him the Noman Award for Excellence in Design.
Kaykobad expresses concern about society’s lack of responsible individuals and hesitation to embrace progress. However, he remains optimistic about the younger generation, believing in their potential to foster a brighter future.
