Students at Jagannath University (JnU) called for a meeting with the Education Secretary on November 12 to discuss handing over the second campus project to the army. The students protested by encircling the Secretariat after the Education Secretary declined to meet with them. During this demonstration, several people were observed chanting, and advisor Nahid Islam, who was there, seemed to attract more attention from the crowd.
Social media surged in support of Nahid Islam in response. Early on November 13, #WeAreNahid began trending on all social media platforms as people denounced the disrespect and showed support for Nahid Islam. Numerous others emphasized Nahid’s contributions to student activism, and the hashtag generated a lot of conversation about showing respect for individuals who stood up for students’ rights.
