The Silent Suffering: Why We Must Stop Fireworks This New Year’s Eve

The world celebrates when the clock strikes twelve on December 31st. But a different story is being told in the background as we watch the fireworks display and set off crackers. Noise and pollution are the enemies of birds and when they are disturbed they fall from the sky. It affects the environment negatively  and the animals are scared.

The effect is severe in Bangladesh. Last year, over 100 birds of four species were found dead in Dhaka the morning after New Year’s Eve. Many  birds get confused due to the loud explosions and the light display and they either fly into buildings or pass  out from the shock. Smaller birds are often affected by the toxic smoke which causes the bird to either suffocate or get lost.

It is not only the birds that are affected. Carbon  monoxide and sulfur dioxide, two hazardous gases that are emitted from fireworks are hazardous to human health as they  pollute the air. Fireworks also contribute to non-biodegradable waste that ends up in water  and on land.

Another popular new year’s day item which is the lanterns are known to cause  fires as well as endanger the lives of animals when they fall.

We need to change the way we  celebrate. In this way, we can still have a good celebration but in a safer and more appropriate  way, and instead of celebrating in a way that will harm the environment and animals, we can opt for better alternatives like using green decorations and candles. Our celebrations should be happy not destructive. Let’s  welcome the new year with kindness towards people, towards the planet and towards all living beings.
