Barrister Suman’s Letter from Prison: What He Wanted His Family to Know?

After being imprisoned following the August 5 uprising that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, former MP of Habiganj-4, Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman, wrote two letters from Kashimpur Jail—one addressed to his mother and another to his siblings and brothers-in-law.

Letter to His Mother:
On Tuesday, December 17, Suman’s brother Sohag, who resides in England, shared the letters on social media. In the letter to his mother, Suman wrote:

“Please don’t worry about me. Allah does everything for the best. At first, it was hard, but I have adjusted now. I pray regularly and read the Quran, and I truly enjoy reading the Bengali translation. Take care of your health. I have caused you so much pain throughout my life. Even during my birth, you suffered because I was a big baby. At 45, you’re still paying my family’s rent—what more can a mother give? My prayers are with you. I wish I could serve you at this age, but instead, you are still taking care of my family. May Allah grant you good health and a long life. Stay well.”

He also addressed concerns about his financial situation:

“Some people ask me, ‘What wealth do you have? How will you sustain yourself in jail for a long time?’ My answer is, I may not have much material wealth, but I have five sisters and a brother. They are my greatest assets. Whether I am in jail or not in this world anymore, I have no regrets. My sisters are the best guardians for the next generation, far better than anyone else could be. My prayers are with you all. Stay well, and if Allah wills, we will meet again soon.”

Letter to His Siblings and Brothers-in-Law:

“Don’t worry about me. I am in jail as a political prisoner, not as a thief or a corrupt person. I never wanted my actions to bring any dishonor to you, and I hope, by Allah’s grace, they never will.”

Family’s Reaction:
Sohag, Suman’s brother, stated on social media that his family is immensely proud of him. He added:

“Barrister Suman has dedicated his life to the welfare of others. He has never engaged in any misconduct or corruption. We believe he will return to the people soon through legal proceedings.”
