“Salahuddin Ahmed is Not One-Man Army, But the Loneliest Man in Governmen”

Salahuddin Ahmed

A Facebook post was shared by Saleh Uddin Sifat, Joint Member Secretary of NCP. In his remarks, he strongly criticized several government ministers for repeated mistakes in their public statements, while describing Salahuddin Ahmed as the “loneliest man” rather than a “one-man army.”

According to Sifat, many ministers often make serious blunders when speaking publicly, while Salahuddin Ahmed appears comparatively more careful with his words. He said,

“সালাহউদ্দিন আহমেদ বিএনপির ওয়ান-ম্যান-আর্মি না; উনি সরকারের লোনলিয়েস্ট ম্যান। কারণ, উনি ছাড়া বাকি যে মন্ত্রীই কথা বলেন, বড় বড় ব্লান্ডার করেন।”
Translation: “Salahuddin Ahmed is not a one-man army of BNP; he is actually the government’s loneliest man. Because apart from him, almost every other minister makes major blunders when they speak.”

He suggested that this may be why BNP relies heavily on him as a spokesperson. Sifat referred to a controversial historical claim, saying:

“১৯৭৯ সালের নির্বাচনে জিয়াউর রহমানকে ধানের শীষ তুলে দিয়েছিলেন মাওলানা ভাসানী।”
Translation: “In the 1979 election, Maulana Bhashani gave the BNP election symbol ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ to Ziaur Rahman.”

He pointed out that this statement is historically incorrect, as Maulana Bhashani had passed away in 1976. He also criticized a legal statement made in parliament:

“গুম প্রতিরোধ ও প্রতিকার অধ্যাদেশে গুমের অপরাধীর সর্বোচ্চ সাজা ১০ বছরের।”
Translation: “In the Enforced Disappearance Prevention and Remedy Ordinance, the maximum punishment for the crime of disappearance is 10 years.”

Sifat argued that this claim is misleading, as the ordinance actually includes the death penalty as the highest punishment for the offense. Referring to another comment, he mentioned:

“আজাদী ইজ নট আওয়ার ল্যাংগুয়েজ।”
Translation:“Azadi is not our language.”

He argued that “Azadi” is widely used in Bangla language and is even the name of a well-known newspaper, making the statement controversial. He further noted a statement from the transport minister who claimed that this year’s Eid journey was comfortable, despite widespread reports of public suffering and travel difficulties.

Sifat suggested that BNP may have chosen Salahuddin Ahmed as their main spokesperson because he tends to make fewer public errors. However, this also places him at the center of criticism, even for issues where other ministers are responsible.
